How To Wear A T-Shirt – 10 Ways

Getting the Organic Basics right…

All summer long I’ve been wearing this black crew neck tee from Organic Basics. Organic Basics have a gorgeous selection of plain t-shirts, underwear and zero waste reusables that are ethically made. This tee is made from 95% GOTS certified organic cotton and 5% lycra to give it just enough stretch to twist or tuck into any position. The brand factories and farms are visited often to ensure the workers there are treated with respect, with fair and safe conditions. But not only that, this t-shirt is honestly comfy enough to sleep in! It feels soft, with medium-weight cotton, washes up brilliantly and doesn’t cost a fortune. They offer both men’s and womenswear. I’ll also be checking out their underwear too so stay tuned for that.

How To Wear A T-Shirt

I choose to have a capsule wardrobe, which means I like to make my clothes work hard by wearing them with as many different outfits as possible. A black tee comes in handy for that as it is easy to wear with anything in my capsule. I have been styling this t-shirt in different ways all summer and I’ve picked my favourite ten to show you. Hopefully, it will provide inspiration for how to wear a t-shirt in a different way. Other looks not shown are – worn as a PJ top and with just underwear in the house when the temperatures were melting!

The first outfit is a black t-shirt tucked into a mini skirt and layered with a coat. This look can work with any coat or skirt. A blazer would look good too. I’m looking forward to wearing this outfit with tights as we come into autumn and winter. Maybe with a cosy knit cardigan. T-shirts are perfect as a layering piece.  The second look is probably what most people think of when they are wearing a tee, the classic jeans, and t-shirt! It’s simple but works so well. It can be easy to change up too depending on the cut of jeans and the accessories you pair with it.

For those transitional days into Autumn, I still want to wear my summer dresses. Adding the tee as an extra layer not only creates a whole new look, it also adds warmth. I’ve tied up the tshirt at the front so it still keeps the silhouette of the dress.

This is a wrap dress that has been tied to keep it open at the front. It elevates the usual tee and jeans while still being casual enough to wear every day. When I wear a wrap dress in its proper form, I’ll often wear a t-shirt underneath too, especially when the temperatures start to drop!

Here I have tied the t-shirt at the back to make the t-shirt appear cropped. A trick for this is to use a hair bobble to tie the fabric on the inside and fold it over. Although this tee has enough stretch to tie it without the bobble. I’ve worn with a black skirt to create a more evening look although it could be worn with flat shoes in the daytime too.

Pairing the t-shirt with a vest top adds more colour and a whole new outfit. This pink top is actually underwear but try it with any camisole or vest top in your wardrobe for the same look! It also works well with jeans or trousers instead of a skirt.

A casual dog walk calls for an untucked tee. I’ll admit I’m usually a ‘tucker in’ but do make an exception on the really casual days. Another option is to wear the tee untucked over jeans and heels for a smarter night out.

Rolling up the sleeves is a small way to take a simple outfit and add something different. It can also make the outfit look that bit more put together. Like you’ve put a bit more thought into what you’re wearing.

Wearing a t-shirt under a dress automatically makes it a lot more wearable. Try it with a dress in your wardrobe that you would never normally wear in the daytime. This dress is too revealing at the top for every day unless it is baking hot so having the t-shirt provides a bit more modesty!

All black creates a base for the most colourful scarves. Check Pinterest for inspirational ways to wear scarves.

This is just ten ways for how to wear a t-shirt, there is no doubt many more depending on what you already have in your wardrobe. By finding new ways to combine clothes we already have, it can be easier on those ‘have nothing to wear’ days! I like to take some time to pick out different outfit combo’s when I first take a new piece of clothing into my wardrobe. It can help to take pictures too, not only to see what works but also to remember for later.

What is your favourite look? Or do you have another way you like to style a tee?
