Cosy Sustainable Winter Hats

Warm at last!

I’ve been looking for more interesting ways to keep warm this winter. The black wooly hat I usually wear is starting to get boring after the 200th wear. So I picked out a cashmere hood from Arket. This one is made from recycled cashmere and responsibly sourced merino wool.

If you live somewhere windy, it’s a winner. I’ve spent many dog walks trying to hold onto hats but with the hood it’s no longer necessary! I find it looks good if I pull the top of the hood so it sits further back on the head. I’ve picked the beige but I’m also loving this handmade option from Etsy. It’s bright coloured crochet squares and would be pretty easy to make if you can crochet (I can’t.) But the more I looked on Etsy the more choice I found. This black and white one uses the granny squares in a more calming colour palette.

Another option is to wear a hat in another colour. I’ve had this one in the grey for ages but always seem to bypass it when I’m getting ready. It’s also from Arket and made from recycled cashmere and responsible wool. I’ve also downloaded a pattern from Petite Knit for a similar one that I have yet to knit. But it’s a good idea if you are into knitting…

I half thought about going down the padded trapper hat route after seeing this one. It’s made with 100% recycled nylon. It’s fun without being too over the top. Changing up a hat is an easy way to alter a look without changing too much. I feel myself getting bored of wearing the exact same thing every time I leave the house in winter. I’ve spotted this hand woven bucket hat on Etsy. This particular colour way gives me Chanel esque vibes. There’s a video of the person weaving the hat together, which almost makes it look easy to make. But I’m sure it’s not!

Another option is wearing a silk scarf. I’ve been wearing a Liberty scarf that I’ve had for ages and surprisingly it keeps the cold out. I’ve since looked at other scarfs and there are so many beautiful designs and colours to choose from. To keep it sustainable there are loads of secondhand and vintage options online. I feel like this is the sort of thing that could be picked up in a vintage shop too so I’ll be keeping an eye out. I’m currently coveting this vintage Liberty scarf,  the gold colour is really nice. And so is this blue one, I think it would be pretty going into the spring months.

The images were all taken around the Footdee area of Aberdeen and the beach too. While I’m wrapped up in all the layers there were people going into the sea with only a swimsuit on. I’m not sure I’ve ever done that in Scotland, let alone in January!
