Ostrich Egg

March 17th 2012 04:47
... and some eggs are big enough to feed a family ...

While visiting the Fremantle Markets last Christmas-time our visitors bought an Ostrich egg. I'd never seen an Ostrich egg before and certainly didn't know they could be bought. Its arrival certainly caused much interest and speculation.

Compare the ostrich egg to the size of a hen's egg

An ostrich lays the largest egg of any living bird ... but it is the smallest egg laid if we compare, by ratio, the weight of the egg to the weight of weight of the bird.

There was much excitement as we contemplated making scrambled ostrich egg - some were eager to taste it - some were not so eager.

Cracked ... eventually

The shell of an ostrich egg is tough. It was difficult to crack, even with a heavy hand and a sharp knife.

The yolk of the ostrich egg was huge and it had a very tough skin. Compare it to the size of the hen's egg. The shell of the ostrich egg is also in the photo.

Ostrich eggs are nutritious.

...ready to eat ...

One ostrich egg goes a long way. It has about the same amount of egg as 24 hen eggs. I enjoyed it. Some said it was like eating a hen's egg. I thought it had a strong egg flavour. Some had a couple of mouths full and didn't want any more. Some came back for a second helping. I'd recommend it.

Canal Rocks - Leeuwin-Naturaliste Park

February 19th 2012 09:44
... and some places display natures beauty and power ...

The Canal Rocks are part of the spectacular coastline that can be found in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Park in the SW of Western Australia.
This special place can be found off Caves Road, south of Yallingup, about three hours south of Perth (on the way to Margaret River).
The perpetual, crashing of the restless waves of the Indian Ocean have worn a series of canals, leaving peaks of rugged, granite rocks.

A boardwalk has been built across one of the small canals to provide easy and safe access to view the canals.

Karri Trees - Boranup Forest

The Boranup Forest is about 20 kms from Margaret River.
The scenic drive through Boranup Forest amongst the magnificent, tall Karri trees is amazing.

Karri trees can grow up to 60 metres or tall. The roads through the forest are suitable for all vehicles. The Boranup Forest is a favourite spot for holiday makers. Travellers can visit briefly and enjoy a BBQ and/or picnic. If you want a longer stay a camping area is provided.

The Karri Forest timbers were heavily milled and the trees we look at today are regrowth. The last mill closed in Karridale in 1913 - nearly 100 years ago.

This morning we dropped our car off for its scheduled service and decided to walk the 9 kms home so we would 'clock up' our daily exercise.
