While you may be interested in the films, it is often the outfits that gain the most attention. The jury president this year is Cate Blanchett and I was so impressed to see that she opened the film festival in a dress she had worn previously! A gorgeous Armani gown. While it shouldn’t be groundbreaking news that someone wore their dress again… it is very unusual!
She had worn it before for the 2014 Golden Globes, where she won the award for best actress. Cate wore the dress again in order to promote sustainability, in a age where we are all so willing to throw clothes away. Presumably she loves the dress too!
A note to point out was that this dress had not been altered to look different or upcylced. This is the exact same dress. Many of us feel obliged to buy new new for every event we attend. Especially women. Did you know that ex president Barack Obama wore the same classic black tuxedo for all formal events in his entire presidency? Nobody noticed. Now can you imagine if Michelle Obama wore the same dress for eight years?!
Formal attire is generally more expensive that casual clothes and yet we rewear them far less. It is totally normal to wear a different dress for every summer wedding or a different outfit for every Christmas party. Especially with the upsurge of social media, we go out knowing that our picture will be floating around on Facebook and Instagram the next day. And feel that we should have a different outfit for every occasion as a lot of people will potentially see the photo evidence.
I’m standing with Cate Blanchett. I want to rewear my clothes again and again. Because I love them and I know they suit me. I don’t want to stress out the day before a party because I haven’t got a new dress to wear. I have a already got a perfect one in my wardrobe.
If you don’t have anything hanging in the wardrobe, secondhand or vintage is an option. Formal dresses are actually one of the easiest things to find in perfect condition, often with the tags still on. They just don’t get worn as much as our everyday clothes. Here are three dresses (yes I got carried away) that I have found online that are similar to the Cate Blanchett dress.
