Wool is a brilliant staple for an autumn and winter wardrobe. Pure wool is antibacterial and breathable meaning it is comfortable to wear, even with the heating cranked up. It’s biodegradable and doesn’t harm the environment in the way that acrylic and poly knitwear can. Wool was Englands most valuable export in Medieval times and is still produced to a high standard all over the UK today.

I’ve listed a few of my favourite brands producing beautiful British made wool jumpers. Most of them are from independent makers who are passionate about making a truly lovely piece.

Handmade pure wool knitwear is expensive. However think of it more as an investment and rather than buying many cheap jumpers every year, pick one and wear it season after season. For anyone looking for more budget knitwear, I would recommend checking out secondhand options. The majority of my winter knitwear is secondhand and most secondhand and charity shops sell mountains of knitwear in perfect condition. Think cashmere is every colour at bargain prices.

British Made Wool Jumpers

The Croft House

When looking for slowly made quality knitwear, anything made in Scotland is usually a good bet maybe because it’s always chilly enough to have a woolly jumper on hand! This fair isle inspired jumper is made in Scotland with Aberdeenshire wool. The design is inspired by Lido buildings built in the 1920s and 1930s around the Scottish coast.

Amber Hards

A contemporary knitwear label based in Bristol. Amber makes the most beautiful pieces in different textures and modern designs. Take a look at the Collections tab on her website for pictures of her creations. And she also has a small ready to wear collection featuring this cosy oversized jumper. This is the kind of jumper I want to put on in Autumn and not take off until March! Made by Amber on a knitting machine in her home studio, this lambswool jumper is a definite winter fave.

Collingwood Norris

Flora Collingwood Norris produces her bright and colourful designs in a small studio in the Scottish borders. She has an extensive knitting CV but decided to start her own label in 2016. This sweater is made from Geelong lambswool and spun and dyed with GOTS approved dyes in Kinross, Scotland. Furthermore, Flora also offers a brilliant visible mending service.

Genevieve Sweeney

This is a striking jumper which combines modern design and artisan skill. This hand intarsia cashmere sweater can take up to fourteen hourse to make. It’s knitted in Scottish spun cashmere and linked by hand before being washed. Additionally, it is possible to personalise it with embroidered initials too.

& Daughter

A brand which is full of beautiful knitwear made in the UK and Ireland. I kind of get a feel of effortless french vibe when I look at their images. They specialise in creating knitwear that is made to last. This particular jumper is knit using four-ply wool which means it will be durable as well as soft. The lilac colour is modern, and yet it is still something that your granny might wear – which can only be a good thing. However, they have plenty of neutral options too.
