Uluru/Ayers Rock - walking the base (1)

July 28th 2011 01:39
... tread with respect ...

Uluru/Ayers Rock towers a majestic 348 metres above the ground, has more bulk below the ground than above it and boasts a base measuring about 9 kilometres.
There are several interesting walks at the base of 'The Rock'. The traveller can choose to walk these with or without a guide.
Uluru/Ayers Rock and the Kata Tjuta National Park are culturally significant for the Anangu traditional owners, and visitors can join informative cultural tours of this area.

We were enjoying a walking along the Lungkata Walk when we came to this bridge. There was interesting vegetation either side and then ... it opened up to reveal a sacred waterhole.

The atmosphere near this waterhole alerts visitors to the fact that this is a special place.

The temperature can be high in the Kata Tjuta National Park so plan your walking for early morning. Even then always take a hat, sunscreen and water because the walks are always more interesting than you expect and often take longer than you plan.

*** a special, quiet place ***
