Sturt Desert Pea - Striking display in a desert place
October 14th 2010 13:57
When flowering the Sturt Desert Pea boasts an exquisite, decorative, eye-catching display.
Flower colour ranges from white to deep pink to scarlet. The flower may or may not have a black 'centre'. It is a perennial plant with prostrate stems.
The Sturt Desert Pea is unique to Australia and, when flowering, delights and draws both locals and tourists to admire its beauty.
The Sturt Desert Pea is named after the Australian explorer Charles Sturt.
It generally grows in hot, arid regions and prefers sandy, well drained soils.
Sturt Desert Peas challenge gardeners who attempt to enhance their gardens with these decorative flowers.
I fell in love with these flowers when my Mother, who lived in Western Australia's wheatbelt, successfully grew some in pots.
We visited the Living Desert on 26-8-10 and were thrilled to see some Sturt Desert Pea plants flowering in all their glory.
The rains have been responsible for an amazing display of this flower this season.
