Public transport problem
October 29th 2008 02:56
A new study by the Australian National University has found that although the majority of Australians are worried about climate change and trying to make changes to tackle the problem, most think twice before using public transport.
The study found that 54 per cent support the idea of an emissions trading scheme, 65 per cent would be happy to pay more to help the planet, and 60 per cent would accept a reduction in the quality of living.
But less than 30 percent of those surveyed said they catch public transport regularly. The study concluded that using public transport is a "more difficult behavioural change" for people to make. Many of the people surveyed had made efforts in other areas, such as recycling more effectively or changing to energy efficient light globes.
In Melbourne at least, an increase in the number of train services - 328 new and extended services across the network scheduled to begin on November 9 - may make public transport more convenient for Victorians.
Hopefully this corresponds to increased usage of public transport, and a drop in carbon emissions.
