Lights Off Australia

:
Due to the interest shown in my "Please Turn Out The Lights" article, I have decided to become involved and share the concept behind "Lights Off Australia".
Australian's are increasingly aware of their day-to-day impact on the planet and are proudly involving themselves in decreasing this impact through simple changes.
As part of the Cool the Globe initiative, the first Wednesday of each month has been designated as Lights Off Australia night, when residents and businesses turn off lights that aren'Ât required.
Lights Off Australia:
City skylines filled with burning bright lights will be a thing of the past if Sunrise and the Australian Conservation Foundation have their way...Companies taking part need to switch off any non-essential lights when they finish work on that day. Residents are asked to go without one light they'd otherwise have on.
Article from the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF):
"We're being realistic. We're not asking people to go without lights when they need them. All weÂre saying is if youÂre not using a light then turn it off, said Sunrise Executive Producer Adam Boland.
ÂThis whole campaign is about cutting down energy wastage. While weÂre starting with just one day per month, we genuinely hope this event starts to change peopleÂs habits and it becomes part of everyday life."
ACFÂs Don Henry says commercial buildings use around a third of all electricity in cities, contributing to AustraliaÃÂs rising greenhouse emissions.
ÂBusinesses can stop wasting energy and help tackle climate change by making sure the lights go off every night when the cleaners leave, by upgrading their lighting control systems and by asking their energy retailer to switch them over to Greenpower.Â
Australians are also being urged to turn off appliances left on standby  leaving mobile phone chargers, TVs and microwaves on standby accounts for up to 10% of the average householdÂs electricity use.
Residents and businesses that participate in Lights Off Australia will be acknowledged on Sunrise.
