Fiddler on the mudflat (LINK)

Believe it or not, it seems that earthquakes can be good for biodiversity....
in 1995, an earthquake in Osaka, Japan, destroyed a 500 m breakwater - causing sea water to flood into a previously freshwater river. This created a 20 m wide, 500 m long mudflat.
As we all know, tidal flats and mangrove areas have been lost worldwide through development - and this example shows how important they are for biodiversity.
In 2001, a new species of fiddler crab was found on the earthquate created yagura mudflat. Now there are thought to be at least 200 crabs. The little nippers have a cool mating dance..the males wave their large white claws in the air in a fanning motion to attract the chicks.
Locals are cleaning up the mudflat and are promoting awarenes of the importance of the muddy banks for wildlife.
